Synopsis

This Synopsis was taken from Google.

Natalie is a New York architect who works hard to get noticed at her job, but is more likely to deliver coffee and bagels than design the city’s next skyscraper. Things go from bad to weird when she gets knocked unconscious during a subway mugging and magically wakes up to find herself in an alternate universe. Always cynical about love, Natalie’s worst nightmare soon comes true when she suddenly discovers that she’s playing the leading lady in a real-life romantic comedy.

The Review

My Overall Thoughts

I did not like this film. At all. It felt very forced and at times excruciatingly condescending to me. “Isn’t it Romantic” treats the audience as having little to no intelligence and constantly spells things out which would have been better left unexplained.  It also tries way too hard to make you laugh whilst rarely succeeding. This film really left a bad taste in my mouth. It is not like a traditional romcom however it is still unfailingly predictable and nauseating in a bad way. I actually stopped watching halfway through and had to force myself to continue for the sake of this review.

The Best Parts of the Movie

As much as I disliked it “Isn’t it Romantic” is not ALL bad. It has some minor/negligible good points. And while the film received mixed reviews, some people really liked it as can be seen from this review “a movie that jabs at romantic comedies also teaches us that romantic comedies can be much more than just the love story, and that individual people matter, too.” By Rachel Leishman.

And some people share my view point: “The film’s reliance on conventions even as it snickers at them gives it the faint air of a con.” By Ben Kenigsberg, Feb. 12, 2019, The NY Times.

Acting

The acting was okayish, it was pretty believable but at the same time it was nothing brilliant or standout. Rebel Wilson and Liam Hemsworth in particular do a fairly good job, however the mediocre script holds them back from being truly engaging. The actors all felt slightly like they were trying too hard and I never felt pulled into their story, I never empathized with them; their problems didn’t feel urgent or important. I just never grew to love them like I do the characters in a good movie.

The Technical Aspects

I liked the clean, fresh look of “Isn’t it Romantic”. In almost every scene the palate was colourful yet harmonic with minimal clashing. I enjoyed looking at the sets and costumes and the music was nothing brilliant but very well paced.

Things That Were Meh

The Script

Oh god the bloody script, the plot is stupid, the purpose of “Isn’t it Romantic” is insulting and for a film designed to make you fall in love with romantic comedies, it fails miserably. The jokes mostly fall flat, with a few amusing moment here and there. The characters feel more shallow than a fish bowl, and the climax is a joke.

Other

I disliked “Isn’t it Romantic” because it makes fun of things in an unsophisticated and often insulting manner; it ties to teach lessons that fall flat because it seems so insincere. The film makes fun of fat people and makes it seem as if it is entirely impossible for a fat person to be deemed attractive in the real world.

It is a film that mocks other, much better and more graceful films and fails in it.

My Final Thoughts

This film sucks, don’t waste your time.

My rating for this film is 3/10.

  1. Aahh I don’t know why I laughed to myself all through your post. I actually really like Rebel Wilson but I haven’t found her films to be anything I’d actually spend my time and money on. Perhaps if it came on TV.

  2. i didn’t like this movie either. Rebel was doing too much, I couldn’t connect to it and very unrealistic

  3. I agree with your review, I actually couldn’t watch it to the end. Not only was it weak but the theme of the movie has been done so many times before and much better. It was disapointing because I really like Rebel.

  4. Well, I watched this movie already. It was really not fun as expected.
