Hi Everyone! I thought since my New Year’s resolution is to post here more regularly, I`d revive a long-dead tradition for my blog: the top ten most anticipated movies post. I scoured through the internet, dived deep into the IMDBs and found a few choice morsels for you and me; i.e. I found a few movies I think would be fun to watch.
So before I begin, I`d like to clarify a few things so that you don’t waste your time: this is entirely based on my opinion and has no factual or evidentiary basis whatsoever. Heads up for horror fans, I tend to have nightmares when I watch horror stuff (due to an overactive imagination) so I avoid those like the plague. Plus, I`m a nerd, through and through; I like comics, fantasy, sci-fi, and history, so if that’s not your cup of tea, this might not be all that appealing. Also, I have not included most remakes, or live-action retellings, as although I do tend to watch some of them, they don’t tend to rank high on my list of great movies.
So let`s dive in!
10. William Tell
- Release Date: September 5, 2024,
- Stars: Claes Bang as William Tell, with Connor Swindells, Golshifteh Farahani, Jonah Hauer-King, Ellie Bamber, Rafe Spall, Emily Beecham, Jonathan Pryce, and Ben Kingsley.
- Genre: Historical Drama
- Plot Synopsis: “William Tell” is an epic historical drama directed by Nick Hamm, based on Friedrich Schiller’s play.
- Where to Watch: The film is expected to be available in theatres, with a UK release on January 10, 2025.
This film seems like a cross between Gladiator, and Braveheart, both excellent movies that I loved, so I`m looking forward to watching it. As I said before, I love historical films and history in general, so this is right up my alley. I anticipate a heartwarming and heart-wrenching story of war, rebellion and justice.
Although, it is quite difficult to find really good historical films, so I don`t know if my high expectations will be met, here`s to hoping!
9. Novocaine
- Release Date: March 14, 2025
- Stars: Jack Quaid, Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson, Jacob Batalon, Betty Gabriel, Matt Walsh
- Genre: Thriller
- Plot Synopsis: Directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, “Novocaine” is a thriller that delves into the dark underbelly of the pharmaceutical industry, exploring themes of addiction and corporate greed.
- Where to Watch: Scheduled for theatrical release; streaming platforms to be announced.
This is a satirical look at how a real-life “superhero” would fare. I enjoyed the idea of it, as I love exploring ideas of what heroism would be like in real life and the dark side of comic books. The high tension portrayed in the trailer also hooked me and I want to see the payoff. Overall, I got the vibe that this might be an interesting one to watch.
8. Superman
- Release Date: July 11, 2025
- Stars: David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan
- Genre: Superhero
- Plot Synopsis: Directed by James Gunn, the film follows Superman as he reconciles his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing, embodying “truth, justice, and the American way” in a sceptical modern world.
- Where to Watch: Expected to release in theatres.
Do I even need to explain this one? It made it into my top ten most anticipated movies because I am finally ready to watch another Superman film. I have steeled myself, and am ready to go once more unto the breach.
Like I previously said, I am a comic fan, and I grew up watching Superman, Batman and Justice League. Incidentally, my favorites are Superman from DC and Iron Man from Marvel. That`s because I always found Tony Stark`s redemption captivating, and Superman`s powers fascinating. Although, I do like both Batman and Captain America, they don’t resonate with me as strongly. Captain America’s lack of extraordinary powers makes him feel a bit underwhelming in comparison, while Batman’s overly grim and dark demeanor can be a bit much for my taste.
Bringing it back to this Superman movie, I want to watch it because I am hoping that it`ll be much better than the previous reboot. Kind of the same reason I keep on watching X-Men movies, despite their tendency for each consecutive movie to see-saw from awesome to awful at the flip of a hat (it`s like they flip a coin to decide if the next one will be good or not; case in point Apocalypse Now).
7. You’re Cordially Invited
- Release Date: January 30, 2025
- Stars: Will Ferrell, Reese Witherspoon, Geraldine Viswanathan
- Genre: Comedy
- Plot Synopsis: A woman planning her sister’s wedding and the father of another bride-to-be discover they’ve double-booked their destination wedding venue. Deciding to share the location, they face ensuing chaos and disaster.
- Where to Watch: Scheduled for theatrical release.
I`m gonna come clean, I`m not all that sophisticated of a movie-goer, I like cheesy rom-coms, I like reading trash novels, and watching isekai anime, and nonsense comedies, so it was a no-brainer to include one in my list. Additionally, I actually hate watching good movies in the cinema, since I like to be sucked into the film and dislike being distracted by people talking. I like watching trashy films because they usually make me laugh.
I picked the one that seemed to have the most potential for fun. Plus, I like to watch relatively clean comedies, I just don`t enjoy the raunchy stuff, really, so this seems like a good bet. So, I`m not expecting this to be profound, or to leave me breathless, but if it manages to get a few chuckles out of me, I`ll call it a win.
6. The Unbreakable Boy (2025)
- Release Date: February 21, 2025
- Stars: Zachary Levi, Amy Acker, Meghann Fahy, Jacob Laval
- Genre: Drama
- Plot Synopsis: The movie tells the heartwarming story of a young boy who faces unique challenges due to a rare brittle-bone disease and autism. What sets him apart is his vibrant, joyous outlook on life that deeply impacts everyone around him, uniting them through his humour and positivity.
- Where to Watch: Expected to be released in theatres.
I wasn’t originally gonna add this one to the list, but one of my faves (Dracula: A Love Tale) had to be cut cause I discovered Keanu Reeves wasn’t in it. There`s a whole scam with loads of fake trailers and stuff that show Keanu as Dracula, so I got hooked. And, since I only included that one to see Keanu Reeves as Dracula, well; it was stricken from the list.
So I actually really liked the concept of this film, but I have seen multiple similar ones and even a really good Korean TV series about an autistic Lawyer (Extraordinary Attorney Woo, check it out if you like, it’s brilliant!), so I thought it might be a bit repetitive. However, the key difference is the bright attitude of the protagonist. I really like constantly positive characters, because I, myself, have a hard time being positive all the time; so I look up to them, and they inspire me.
5. In the Lost Lands
- Release Date: March 7, 2025
- Stars: Milla Jovovich, Dave Bautista, Arly Jover, Amara Okereke
- Genre: Fantasy Adventure
- Plot Synopsis: Based on a short story by George R.R. Martin, the film follows a queen who, desperate to obtain the gift of shape-shifting, hires a sorceress named Gray Alys (Jovovich). Together with her guide, they venture into the perilous Lost Lands, confronting both man and monster.
- Where to Watch: Scheduled for theatrical release; streaming details to be announced.
No trailer is available.
This is a film based on a short story written by G. R. R. Martin, (The author of Game of Thrones) and the special thing about that story; is that it`s from the perspective of the all-powerful, mysterious, witch character. As stated by Michele F. an awesome reviewer on Goodreads, “There are plenty of reasons to avoid using an enigma-shrouded, all-knowing figure as a main character…it’s too easy to ruin the mystery, maybe; too tempting to try and reveal motivations.” But that’s the charm of the narrative, that Martin manages to pull it off with really subtle story writing.
However, I`m intrigued to see whether filmmakers will be able to translate that subtlety into film. If they do manage, it promises to be a really exciting watch.
4. Death of a Unicorn
- Release Date: 2025
- Stars: Jenna Ortega, Will Poulter, Téa Leoni
- Genre: Dark Comedy
- Plot Synopsis: Father-daughter duo Riley and Elliot accidentally hit a unicorn with their car and bring it to the wilderness retreat of a mega-wealthy pharmaceutical CEO.
- Where to Watch: Details on distribution are currently unavailable.
Death of a Unicorn has a highly intriguing and very unexpected plot. The plot captured my interest instantly. I, like many of my peers, have grown up with Harry Potter, and so that is what my reference for unicorn legends is based on. Therefore, I can easily predict the plot, i.e. most likely they will have to make amends to the unicorn spirit or some such to get out of trouble. It’s a metaphor for the environment, yada yada.
But, the idea of hitting and killing a unicorn with a car, and the contrast of the mythical with the mundane is what makes me want to watch it. It has the potential to be very fun, however, I predict that this movie will mostly fail to live up to expectations, due to the very generic nature of the trailer. Nonetheless, I hope I`m proven wrong in the end.
3. Love Hurts
- Release Date: February 7, 2025
- Stars: Ke Huy Quan, Ariana DeBose, Daniel Wu, Sean Astin
- Genre: Action/Adventure
- Plot Synopsis: Marvin, a Milwaukee realtor, is pulled back into his past life when his former partner-in-crime, Rose, resurfaces with an ominous message. As he navigates a world of ruthless hitmen and double-crosses, Marvin’s open houses turn into deadly war zones.
- Where to Watch: Scheduled for theatrical release.
Ok, as for this one, I like the plot twist. Although I am a bit apprehensive that they revealed the twist in the trailer, however, this seems like a cool movie. It kind of inverts your expectations regarding Asian stereotypes and seems like a sort of campy gang movie. I was intrigued by the juxtaposition of the set-up to the plot twist and I am curious as to how it`ll end.
2. The Gorge
- Release Date: March 14, 2025
- Stars: Miles Teller, Anya Taylor-Joy, Sigourney Weaver
- Genre: Action Thriller
- Plot Synopsis: Details are currently limited, but “The Gorge” is expected to be an intense action thriller with a romantic subplot, directed by Scott Derrickson.
- Where to Watch: Set for release on Apple TV+.
Alright, this second in my top ten most anticipated movies was incredibly interesting, sort of nearly a sci-fi, fantasy mix it has a potential romance that instantly caught my attention. I could feel the chemistry through the screen in the trailer, and I want to see how it develops.
The two leads in the story are situated in opposite towers across a gorge, and cannot interact. I don’t want to give too much away, but it seems like a forbidden love action thriller and I am quite intrigued.
1. Mickey 17
- Release Date: Expected April 18, 2025
- Stars: Toni Collette, Robert Pattinson, Mark Ruffalo
- Genre: Science Fiction
- Plot Synopsis: Directed by Bong Joon-ho, “Mickey 17” is a sci-fi drama about cloning, featuring Robert Pattinson in the lead role.
- Where to Watch: Expected to be available in theatres.
Okay, so this one is a doozy, it seems hilarious, and I, personally, haven`t seen much of Robert Pattinson since ye ole Twilight days so, this is sort of re-introduction to him as well. (Yes, yes, I haven’t seen him as Batman, I`m still having PTSD flashbacks from the horror show that was Batman Vs. Superman, so… I have yet to get up the courage.)
The reason it`s my most anticipated movie of 2025 is that I get the feeling that it`ll be quite good. (Or, we can come back here and laugh at me when I`m proven wrong later.) Plus I love the concept. I`ve been quite into colonization sci-fi novels lately, and one of my favourite books (The Last Hour of Gann) revolves around a similar plot, so I was fascinated. I hope it turns out well worth waiting for.
Honorable Mentions:
These are the ones that did not quite make it into my top ten most anticipated movies for one reason or another.
11. The Legend of Ochi
- Release Date: March 14, 2025
- Stars: Helena Zengel, Finn Wolfhard, Emily Watson, Willem Dafoe
- Genre: Fantasy
- Plot Synopsis: Directed by Isaiah Saxon, the film follows a young girl who runs away from home and learns to communicate with an elusive animal species known as Ochi, embarking on a journey of self-discovery.
- Where to Watch: Scheduled for theatrical release;
This one is just a bit too similar to Death of a Unicorn, plus it kind of seems almost identical to E.T. and I don`t think it`ll be nearly as good, so I left it off the main list.
12. The Brutalist
- Release Date: December 20, 2024 (Canada)
- Stars: Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn
- Genre: Epic Period Drama
- Plot Synopsis: Architect László Tóth and his wife flee post-war Europe in 1947 to America, aiming to rebuild their lives and careers. The film explores themes of ambition, sacrifice, and the birth of modern America.
- Where to Watch: Expected via A24, Universal Pictures, and Focus Features.
This has already been released, although I haven`t seen it; since it’s not in theatres here in Pakistan. I expect I’ll have to wait a good few months for it to be released on a streaming platform, but since it’s been released, it doesn’t count.
