Featured: A Review of The Witcher – Season 2

The story is deteriorating in The Witcher season 2, as are the character motivations. The personalities are getting muddier, and more unclear. Basically, it’s making less sense this season. We’ll have to see whether this trend continues in the next seasons. Review of season one was much more positive.

The Synopsis of The Witcher S2

So basically IMDB describes it as:

The Witcher is an American fantasy drama web television series created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich for Netflix. It is based on the book series of the same name by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. The Witcher follows the story of Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, who struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than monsters and beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a special gift, the three must learn to navigate independently the increasingly volatile Continent.

The Good Points of The Witcher

The shows’ fantasy vibe is strong and if you enjoy fantasy, you’ll probably like it. The costumes and sets are really nice in this one. Plus, some of the monsters that show up are very cool. I actually liked Jaskier as a character much more in this one. The individual character actors are great but the writing is bad enough to hinder their charisma jarringly this time.

Setting

While the world building itself is quite weak, the setting, especially the multiple fortresses are quite appealing.

Acting

The actors are once more very charming and even manage to get you to sympathize with their irrational actions.

The Bad Points of The Witcher

Okay… the show is meh throughout, to the point where I just found it mildly entertaining, while still bingeable.

The writing

God it was bad. The characters are acting so out of character, it’s not even funny. Gerault suddenly is a dad, Yennefer has forgotten everything she learned throughout the last season of character development and well Cirri is just excruciatingly lame and whiny,a caricature of the teenager, she’s intelligent when it suits the plot and completely dumb if it doesn’t.

Overall

It’s a solid 6/10. Watchable but nothing special.
