Black Eyed Beans Recipe

Black Eyed Beans are widely grown in Africa and south asia. It is a very  useful crop as the the beans are used for the human consumption while after extracting the beans remains are used as fodder for buffaloes and cows. It needs a hot weather to grow which is plenty in Pakistan, India and Africa. In fact Black Eyed Beans are grown and eaten all around the world.

In sub-continent, black-eyed beans are called lobia or rongi and cooked like daal (lentils), they are either served with roti, naan or with boiled rice. Black eyed beans are my favorite in all the lentils. They are very tasty and some people also make chat out of the black eyed beans. We will share the chat recipe sometime else. Here we give the recipe of salan, I hope you try it and enjoy it. This is also a completely vegetarian meal, which can easily be made vegan by substituting ghee with any other cooking oil.


  • Black eyed beans 250 grams
  • Cooking oil or ghee 2 serving spoons
  • Onions medium size 2 finely chopped
  • 1 medium size tomato chopped
  • Ginger garlic paste 1 table spoon each
  • Salt 1 teaspoons
  • chili powder 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder ¼ teaaspoon
  • Baking soda ½ teaspoon
  • Water 1 liter


  1. Soak black eyed beans in water over night;
  2. In the morning put the pressure cooker on fire and add ghee and onion;
  3. When the onion is brown add tomatoes, ginger and garlic paste, and sauté for one minute;
  4. Now add salt, chili powder and turmeric powder;
  5. Sauté for 15 seconds;
  6. Now add black eyed beans and and sauté for 2 minutes;
  7. Add one liter of water and close the lid of the cooker;
  8. When the wistle blows cook for 18 minutes;
  9. Now open the cooker lid and delicious black eyed beans salan is ready;

Serve with roti or naan or with boiled rice.
