Synopsis

This is the story of two households constantly clashing with each other in a humorous manner. Nawab Saheb’s two wives contest each other and drag their grandchildren into their spats. The two grandmothers fight like cats and dogs, with their grandchildren taking their sides. Pitting the two families against each other.

In this atmosphere, through a comedy of errors two of these grandchildren end up married to each other. The two cousins are put through all manners of difficulties while trying to create a harmonious marriage. Along the way they fall in love with each other even though they have the opposite personality.

My Overall Thoughts

Chupke Chupke is a lighthearted and fun look into Pakistani culture. It makes you laugh and it makes you giggle. It kinda drags in some areas but is overall solid and feels heartwarming. While the two main characters don’t have a Romeo-Juliet level of chemistry, their interactions are sweet and charming. The show is most definitely stolen by the strong personalities of the grandmas. Overall the show is a cute, funny, and carefree reprieve from the usual death and destruction we find on TV these days.

The Best Parts of the drama

The best part of this show is that it gives the viewers what they want. Not in terms of fan-service necessarily, but in terms of romantic fulfillment. It neatly ties off each thread and ends in a very wholesome manner.

Comedic Duos

Okay so, again here I’d like to bring up the two grannies who are constantly at each other’s throats and won’t let up even a little, to the point that they need outside intervention in order to get them to stop. Their contest is vastly amusing, mostly because of its sheer pettiness.

The show is full of this dual comedic relief, where the strong personality of one character clashes or suppresses another and this leads to dynamic comedic moments that are absurd and yet blithe at the same time.

The Acting

The acting is simply superbly stupendous. Especially from the senior actors in the field, they work together amazingly well and have comedic timing down to an art form. Most of the other actors are alright as well.

Things That Were Not good

This is one those dramas with the good outweighing the bad. The main gripes I have with it is:

Characterization

It is sometimes (it seems intentional) too one-dimensional. The character are made comedic by suppressing their emotional responses. This is extremely apparent, especially in the heroine’s dad, who doesn’t care about anything but money, even in the face of familial crisis. Other times the character develops too rapidly with no prior indication of the thought process. All of this tends to jar one out of the story.

Script

While I enjoy the comedy, storytelling is scarified in its path.  The story lags and drags just to squeeze out another joke. While sometimes it skips over important details entirely for the sake of joking. The emphasis is too far on humour and not enough on story.

My Final Thoughts

The drama is “Good but not great”.

My rating for this drama is 7/10.
