Alsi ki Pinnian (Flaxseed or Linseed Supplement/Snacks)

Today we are sharing a classic recipe for a linseed/flaxseed diet supplement/snack. Alsi ki Pinnian, pronounced ul-see key pin-ni-yaan, have been used for thousands of years to restore strength in the body and improve the immune system. Alsi ki Pinnian contain Omega 3 essential fatty acids, which are good for a healthy heart; it is anti-inflammatory and has also the qualities of a pain reliever. Ingredients for Alsi ki Pinnian

  • alsi powder 1 kg(flax seeds or linseeds)
  • wheat flour 1 kg
  • desi ghee 500g
  • sugar 750g
  • almonds 100g
  • raisins 100g
  • pistachios 100g
  • cashew nuts 100g
  • green cardamom powder 1,tsp (heaped)
  • sesame seeds 100 grams
  • powdered coconut 100 grams
  • 5  cardamom pods



Sugar Syrup
  1. Clean the raisins, this is done by separating out and removing the tiny woody stems. Also, toss out any raisins that are unsuitable to eat; these can be identified through a change of shape or colour from the normal ones. Put the clean raisins in a separate plate;
  2. Grind pistachios, almonds, cashew nuts, sesame seeds as fine as you can get them (small crumb-like bits are acceptable) and put them in a separate bowl;
  3. Take a cooking pot and add half a cup of water and all of the sugar and cook until the sugar is dissolved and the colour of the mixture is a pale brown, remove from the fire and keep aside.


  1. Take out a large cooking pot (which can fit 10 kg of material), and a large sturdy spoon for stirring (preferably metal);
  2. Put the cooking pot on a low flame and add the desi ghee, now add pop open the cardamom pods and add only the cardamom seeds. Let them cook for 30 seconds;
  3. Turn up the heat to a medium flame. Add wheat flour and stir. Cook till the wheat flour has browned,
  1. Now add the powdered alsi and cook for about two minutes, stirring constantly. When alsi powder changes colour, and becomes a light golden brown, add raisins and other ground dry fruit.
Assorted Nuts
  1. Now, turn down the flame to low and add the sugar syrup to the pot with the cooked ingredients. Mix it well and then take the pot off of the flame.
  2. Place the pot to a side and let it cool for a little bit (around 2 minutes), and then, while it is still relatively hot, make small round balls, or whatever shape you like.
  1. You can get the fun shapes that I have by placing cookie cutters on a parchment-lined surface, filling them to the brim and tamping down the pinni mix. Then, lift the cookie cutter straight up while gently pressing the pinni out.
  1. The pinnies are ready to eat. Generally one pinni is eaten at breakfast time.
