Part two of my list is finally out! Check out part one here.
#5 Ready Player One
This trailer is the property of: Warner Bros. Pictures
Release Date: Mar. 30
Starring: Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn
This Steven Spielberg flick is based on the book of the same name and is a sci-fi film set in a dystopian future of widespread poverty and overpopulation. The picture will mostly be set in the computer-generated realm of OASIS, where players like Wade Watts hunt for a $240 billion Easter Egg left by its deceased inventor which also gives the one who finds it dominion over the entire game world of OASIS. The film pays homage to the eighties and is a goldmine pop culture references.
I am intrigued by this movie not only because of the premise but also because I can identify with the protagonist as being an average person who uses his normally useless knowledge of pop culture to succeed at the game. It has great promise but the hype around it could also backfire majorly if it does not live up to the buildup. I can honestly say that I do not think this film will be a masterpiece of cinema; but it could be fun and enormously entertaining.
Now let’s move on to:
#4 Mortal Engines
This trailer is the property of: Universal Pictures
Release Date: December. 13
Starring: Leila George D’Onofrio, Jihae, Hugo Weaving
This is a sci-fi, post-apocalyptic action adventure. It features the amazing concept of mechanized cities that roam around and consume smaller cities. It looks completely awesome! I saw the trailer and was immediately intrigued but what sealed the deal was that it is being produced by Peter Jackson. This is a film I will be watching purely by virtue of my curiosity; since the trailer just teases you and cuts away. I can’t wait to find out what’s happening! Plus it reminds me of Howl’s Moving Castle which is one of my all-time favorite movies.
Next is:
#3 Black Panther
This trailer is the property of: Marvel Entertainment
Release Date: February. 12
Starring: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira
This movie is part of the Marvel extended universe and is the story of the Wakandan King: T’Challa. It will see King T’Challa coming back home to the technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda where he stands alone in confronting a threat to his kingdom – and a possible world war.
Honestly at first I wasn’t really all that exited for this movie; I was all like: “Oh great, another Marvel stopgap to Infinity Wars”, I only decided to watch it to stave off my inner Marvel fan-girl which was salivating for Infinity War. So I checked out the trailer and I was blown away!
My inner fan-girl immediately latched on and all was lost… Anyway, back to my serious thoughts, I really love the fact that T’Challa’s adventure takes place in his own kingdom because it allows this film to spread its wings and add rich world-building as well give the writers a chance to fully flesh out T’Challa’s character and show his personal struggles. Such as, how does he balance his Heroic activities with his royal responsibilities? I could ramble on and on, but all I’m going to say is that I’m excited!
On to my second pick:
#2 Red Sparrow
This trailer is the property of: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: March.1
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Joel Edgerton, Jeremy Irons
Meet Dominika Egorova, a Prima ballerina who has suffered an injury that ends her career; with no way to make ends meet and having her mother dependent on her; she joins Sparrow Academy. There she is trained in the arts of seduction, manipulation and assassination. She is forced to learn to use her body as a weapon and is sent on her first mission. Her new abilities place an enormous responsibility on her shoulders which tries to deal with while also fulfilling her missions and deciding where her loyalties lie.
The plot immediately brings to mind black widow; it is initially what drew me to the film, but the visuals and trailer sealed the deal. It looks like this is going to be a movie that deals with a lot of heavy subjects such as power, morality, responsibility and trust; if they manage to pull it off it could be spectacular. Here’s to hoping!
Come on guys, you all knew what this pick was going to be:
#1 Avengers: Infinity War
This trailer is the property of: Marvel Entertainment
Release Date: May.4
Starring: Everyone in the Entire MCU
Okay, honestly we all know what this movie is about but I’ll rehash briefly anyway. This film is the culmination of the Marvel Avengers films and what all the films have been building up to. Thanos attacks and the Avengers musts unite to defeat him and protect the infinity stones; as well as the entire universe. Of course I’m excited! I love these movies! I’m not going to miss the finale! And, honestly the hype is simply unreal at this point, we are all waiting impatiently. In the end I just have to say that though I know that the Avengers movies are not perfect they are still hella entertaining and enjoyable and just overall fun. And in the end that is what you’re paying for isn’t it?
