Featured: A Review of the film “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” (2022)

Lady Chatterley’s Lover was honestly one of those things that Netflix keeps shoving in your face until you finally give in and just watch it. It turned out to be watchable, yet mediocre and with a really unpleasant underlying theme. I wanna keep it no spoilers but what the woman in this film does is just abhorrent and sad, most of the characters are not all that likable either. The stuff it has going for it are the costumes and the fan service but more on that later.

The story kept seeming very familiar, until I realized it was one of those purportedly classic novels, famous for being scandalous at the time, but rather tame by today’s standards.

The Synopsis of Lady Chatterley’s Lover

So basically IMDB describes it as:

A story well ahead of its time, We follow the life of Lady Chatterley, a woman born to a life of wealth and privilege, who soon finds herself married to a man that she eventually falls out of love with. Lady Chatterley engages in a torrid affair with a gamekeeper on their English estate, discovering more desire and intimacy than she thought possible. When she realizes that she has fallen heart and soul, she breaks all traditions of the day and seeks happiness with the man she loves.

The Good Points of Lady Chatterley’s Lover

The film has a good setting, with gorgeous costumes and elaborate sets. The historical atmosphere is well and truly set. It’s like setting up the table with the finest chinaware, then filling the plates with a thin watery cabbage soup, weird and kind of disappointing. The only supposedly attractive thing about this adaptation is the explicit scenes, and personally I just foun it distasteful.

Setting

The background of the story is detailed and very pretty, historical attributes are nicely set up. The manor house and especially the side characters serve to bring an air of antiquity to the film that is lacking whenever the main characters interact.

The Bad Points of Lady Chatterley’s Lover

As you can clearly tell, I struggled to come up with anything good to say about this one. However I have a laundry list of flaws to iterate.

The Romance

This film is not only not a good adaptation (missing the cultural and political undertones of the book), it isn’t a solid romance either. I honestly don’t understand how, when or why the main characters fell in love, it was just suddenly  there, i.e. they were saying it but I wasn’t believing them. The focus of the film was not the romance, or even the intrigue, it’s the explicit scenes. They are the obvious focal point of the film makers, it really makes the film bland and featureless, and the characters very unrelatable.

Overall

It’s a bad 4.5/10. Would not watch again
