The Review

My Overall Thoughts

One of the best romance films I have seen in a long time. I watched “A Star Is Born” because I came across the song Shallow, on YouTube, the song was great and people were praising the film so I decided to watch it. I was not disappointed. This film left me both sad and angry. It is however worth watching and has really good songs. I liked watching this film, and I have very few gripes with it. It was overall a fantastic use of 2 hours of my life.

The Best Parts of the Movie

“A Star Is Born” has some very praiseworthy performances, great music and immersive storytelling. Character interactions in this film seem very real, not formulated or fake at all. This is one the films biggest strengths.

Acting

The actors in “A Star Is Born” are all fairly competent, each filling their role believably. They have very good emotional reactions, and at times they make you fall in love with them. However the acting is not really on par with that of “The Favourite” as by the end, I didn’t really love the characters, but was more in love with their love story. Bradley Cooper is better at emoting than Lady Gaga, however they both give quite solid performances.

The Script

Unlike “The Favourite”, the main strength of “A Star Is Born” lies in the story. The actors fill their roles remarkably well, but it is the progression of the sequence of events and their dialogue as well as plot that makes this film heart-wrenching and beautiful.  They add a sense of realism to the world through little touches such as the inclusion of real world celebrities who play themselves. They also have very good scene progression and development; they know exactly how far a scene needs to go for maximum emotional impact.

The Music

Wow, what can I say, but that I was blown away, not only by how good the music was, but by how well it fits into the story. The music is integral to this storyline and I loved it, the musical scenes were some of the most intense and emotionally impactful ones. Each song adds to atmosphere, plot and the love story. of “A Star Is Born”

Things That Were Meh

I don’t really have many complaints when it comes to “A Star Is Born” itself. I disagree with the choices made by the filmmakers at some points regarding the use of some of the cinematography; however, those could just be a result of my ignorance so…

Anyway the only criticism that I have is about the development of Ally’s character, she always felt a little incomplete and dislikeable to me. You are mostly able to ignore it, however, the reasons for some of her character’s decisions are really kind of unsatisfactory, and at times she seems like a very ungrateful type of person. Her character is not given the same type of weight as Bradley Cooper’s, despite the title of the film, she doesn’t seem like the central character. The film is not about her success, but instead about the men who engineered it.

My Final Thoughts

This is a movie that is emotionally rich and complex, it leaves you with a lot of thoughts and questions. Overall  I highly recommend it.

My rating for this film is 8/10.
