My Top 10 Most Anticipated Movies of 2019: Part 1

This is Part 1 of my list of the top ten anticipated movies in 2019. I have deliberately left out many remakes, sequels and series continuations in my list (such as the Disney remakes, Frozen 2, Dowton Abbey, that cringy Pokemon movie etc.) as while I do look forward to seeing them, I am not really exited about them. I have also left out all the thrillers as I kinda hate horror films.

#10 Captain Marvel

Release date: March 8

Synopsis: Oscar-winner Brie Larson steps gets into the Marvel game in this ’90s-set adventure about an air force pilot named Carol Danvers with—you guessed it—mysterious superpowers.

My Thoughts: I am both anticipating and dreading this movie, I wasn’t all that satisfied by the trailer and I’m not really sold on Jamming a new hero in at this point in the franchise. So I await this movie in one part curiosity, one part trepidation and one part excitement.  Plus being the 100% MCU fangirl I am, I gotta include this in my list.

#9 SHAZAM!

Release date: April 5

Synopsis: We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s case, by shouting out one word – SHAZAM! – this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult superhero Shazam.

My Thoughts: I gotta be honest; I included this one because of pure and simple curiosity. I kinda think it’s gonna be really cringy and weird, but it also seems to have the potential to surprise us by being brilliant. I am ready to find out which it will be.

# 8 What Men Want

Release date: February 8, 2019

Synopsis: This gender-swapped take on the Mel Gibson comedy What Women Want sees Taraji P. Henson playing a sports agent who can hear what the men in her industry are thinking. And, we suspect, she won’t take no s–t from any of them.

My Thoughts: My interest in this movie stems can be summarized in one word: Intrigued. I like the concept and I imagine it could lead to an interesting and revelatory discussion about psychology and human behavior if done well.  I am also looking forward to getting a few chuckles out of the whole thing, let’s see if this movie manages to live up to expectations.

#7 Artemis Fowl

Release date: August 9, 2019

Synopsis: Director Kenneth Branagh and stars Judi Dench and Josh Gad, who all worked together on last year’s Murder on the Orient Express, reunite for this adaptation of the popular fantasy book series that centers on a young criminal mastermind who kidnaps a fairy in hopes of ransoming her to an evil pixie in exchange for his father.

My Thoughts: Okay, okay I know the trailer seems kinda crappy, but I really like Artemis Fowl and a movie about him would be awesome (if it was made well). I just, I want to believe that it might be a good movie, and well, even if it isn’t I am the type that always watches even crappy adaptations of things I love. (Hence the fact that I sat through the torture that was The Last Airbender, in completely horrified awe at just how many things you can get wrong in one movie.) But; hope springs eternal and I think this one at least won’t be as bad as that.

#6 High Life

Release date: April 12, 2019

Synopsis: The fact that French director Claire Denis (Beau Travail) is tackling a cerebral sci-fi movie — about a group of death-row prisoners sent into deep space in search of a black hole — should be enough to get you salivating. But wait, there’s more! Robert Pattinson is a criminal suddenly forced to take care of a baby; Juliet Binoche straps herself into something aptly named a “Fuckbox”; and OutKast’s André 3000 joins the crew as a philosophical fellow traveler. It’s even weirder, and more insanely, thought-provokingly wonderful, than it sounds.

My Thoughts: This movie has quite an interesting Sci-fi premise, and I have seen far too few sci-fi films lately. I am looking forward to this one quite a bit.
