How to Carry a Wounded Person

Translation of Hakeem Saeed’s “Dehati Mualij”

Chapt 1 : Accidents; contd.

In the cities the ambulance and stretchers are available for the persons injured in an accident but in the villages these facilities are not available so here are some safe ways to carry the wounded/injured person.

Method 1

The injured person is conscious and does not have a broken bone and is not bleeding then one can carry the person on another person’s back like we carry a child. If this is not possible because wounded person is a child or an old person then he could be carried in lap of a person. This method should only be used if the person is not wounded severely.

Method 2

If the injured person is bleeding and is complaining of pains in the body parts then first try to stop the bleeding by doing the following and then give him water to drink.

  1. Give the patient water to drink and try to calm down the patient;
  2. Cut the piece of cloth around the wound and clear some space around the wound;
  3. Wash the wound with clean cold water;
  4. Press the wounded place with both thumbs to dtop the bleeding;
  5. If the bleeding does not stop then use a bandage and tie the wound with it, and raise the part from the other body parts with the help of a cushion;

When the bleeding stops arrange for a cot to carry the person to a doctor or home. Put the patient on the cot carefully so that he is not uncomfortable and two people should pick the cot and take thee person to the required place for treatment. Avoid moving the patient too much.
