Ok, so this gonna be a list of shows/movies that just were unbearable to watch for one reason or another. Not shows that were boring, but those that I actively disliked. However, just because they were not my cup of tea, doesn’t mean nobody will enjoy them. And to avoid focusing on the negativity as much in my life, I have set myself a rule. I have to say three nice things about each one included on my list.
Also I am just focusing on the currently popular/newish stuff. This list is also arranged in order of least disliked by me to most disliked by me. Number 1 is most disliked and the night it goes the more tolerable I find it.
Synopsis, taken from Wikipedia (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insatiable_(TV_series))
“Patty is a teenager who was overweight and bullied as a teen. After being on a liquid diet for three months over summer vacation, she is now thin and seeks revenge on her bullies. She is helped by Bob, a disgraced and dissatisfied civil lawyer, who has no idea what she is about to unleash upon the world.”
Why I Dislike the Show?
The reasons to dislike this show are pretty damn obvious. The show’s characters are ALL horrible, horrible people with absolutely zero redeeming qualities. And when I say zero I mean flat out zero, they are selfish, mean, repulsive human beings for the most part and whenever a character accidentally displays a hidden good side, it is promptly ruined by their next heinous act, which never fails to appear within the same episode. This keeps the watcher on the Edge of their seat yes, however the suspense and flipping between sympathy and dislike for a character quickly gets boring as you find yourself thoroughly hating the characters. I literally could not bear it and stopped watching halfway through the season.
Another reason that ties directly into the previous one, well since you hate/feel indifferent about most of the characters you just won’t be that interested in their fates. It least it was that way for me. Apart from wanting to see them punished I didn’t want to know what would happen to them.
Also another major peeve was that since the show is working towards making the viewer actively dislike the characters, it doesn’t really have any inherent meaning to it. I mean what is the message/inherent theme/value here supposed to be? “All people are just horrible?” Any value that the show tries to support completely backfires as ALL of its characters are bad people that nobody in their right minds would emulate.
For example take time when the main character Patty acts all supportive about another character who is overweight and she tries to show her support and admiration for people of all body types. Now that is a good value to follow, however due to the fact that Patty is such a b**ch I cannot appreciate the value, which comes off as not only fake but nauseatingly hypocritical.
I just, sigh, don’t get the point of this show, the reason for it’s existence, the method behind the madness, ya know? Thus I can’t really enjoy the bad people cause I don’t know if the endgame is worth it. I mean if the characters don’t face consequences or become better people in the.end, what is the point? The show doesn’t do a good job if making me believe there even is an endgame, so I just could not get into it, even though I gave it a fair shot.
Three Positives About the Show:
- It is well produced, in terms of quality of filming/editing/ technical stuff.
- The plot is captivating and it kind if like looking at train wreck, you know it is awful but you can’t look away.
- The Acting in this show is phenomenal.
#2 Nailed It
Synopsis, taken from IMDB (https://m.imdb.com/title/tt6987788/):
Home bakers with a terrible track record take a crack at re- creating edible masterpieces for a $10,000 prize. It’s part reality contest, part hot mess.
Why I Dislike the Show?
Ugh this show, it really rubbed me the wrong way. There are three main reasons I dislike it. Number 1, it highlights and focuses on creating negativity. What I mean by that is that it is a show that exists only to see people fail and so views can laugh at their failures. It drags people down, gives them challenges they are sure to fail for the sake of cheap entertainment. Sure these people are there voluntarily, however, the fact that the are essentially promised a prize to make a fool of themselves, really rubs me the wrong way. I don’t like watching failure, it makes me sad for the effort they make, and makes me want to help them. And I don’t know about you but I for one do not like any form of entertainment that makes me feel bad, there’s enough of that in real life as it is.
The second reason I dislike it is cause I really hate watching people botch up baking as I am a hobbyist baker myself, not only do they waste perfectly good ingredients, but if the end result is bad I feel bad, it is not at all satisfying.
The third reason is that many times the “masterpieces” they show are just so ugly/bad, I mean what was up with those ugly cake cake pops in the first episode? At least have the stuff made by chefs be awesome! BTW I don’t mean it was always bad, just sometimes.
Three Positives About the Show:
- I liked the guest judge format and one of my favourite YouTube pattisieres Joshua John Russel ended up in one episode.
- I like that some of the food is gorgeous.
- I like the fact that the poor sufferers at least win a prize out of their suffering.
#1 Sierra Burgess is a Loser
Synopsis, taken from Google:
A case of mistaken identity leads to an unexpected romance when a teen joins forces with a popular student to win the heart of her high school crush.
Why I Dislike the Movie?
Ugh, like i have seen floating round the internet, this movie should have actually been named “Sierra Burgess is a Horrible Person”. She literally engages in catfishing and what could be seen as sexual assault. She also backstabs the one person who had been helping her all along. She lies and schemes and is totally forgiven for all her horrible deeds because she acts as if being a little chubby makes her totally unattractive and victimised.
I actually do not mind the side characters/ other main characters it is just that since the story makes Sierra the main character and we are supposed to sympathise with her it turns out really bad. Sierra is literally a horrible person.
- The casting for Sierra is perfect, looks wise, for once the main character actually looks how they are supposed to, rather than just a pretty girl with nerdy glasses.
- I love some of the other characters.
- It starts out pretty cute.
