Synopsis

Harper and Charlie are overworked, underpaid assistants wasting their 20s slaving away for bosses who treat them like dirt and work them ’round the clock. When they realize that they would have much more free time if the people they worked for weren’t single, they concoct a plan to lure their bosses into a faux-romance.

The Review

My Overall Thoughts

As I said previously in my Review of The Kissing Booth, I am usually a big fan Romantic Comedies, and “Set It Up” was one that left me feeling satisfied. You know that way one feels after a really good but simple homemade dinner, that’s the way I felt about this movie: content. This is a Rom-Com that is strictly by the books, sweet cheesy and very predictable, however it leaves the watcher with their expectations fulfilled and  feeling happy. It is the very definition of a feel- good Rom-Com.

The Best Parts of the Movie

“Set It Up” is a very predictable and by the books, however it does not feel boring, or drag on, it is a cute and happy rom-com.

The best part of this movie were definitely the character interactions. The characters were simultaneously caricatures that you see only in movies and yet there are several moments in the film where they feel real. For me this was especially true during the Pizza Scene and the Cafe Chips and water scene (don’t worry, no spoilers here, you won’t get these references until you watch the movie). While the bosses’ characters were very exaggerated and at times cartoonist, it was quite fun to watch and they too had some humanizing scenes which helped to not take the whole thing over the top.

The side characters in “Set It Up” have more skeleton personalities, however some have comedic quirks that make them cute and funny rather than irritating. I really cannot say much more more about them as there is nothing more to say.

The settings and places are fun and served their purposes, however it was the execution of the plot which made “Set It Up” so fun to watch. The plot is nothing revolutionary, however it is played out in such a fun way. With plenty of shenanigans and small obstacles that make you feel invested, however it never quite crosses the line of quirky fun to become contrived and so it pulls you along in a fun romp.

One the most noteworthy elements in this film is the smooth, even and fast-paced flow to the script. You are never jarred out your enjoyment of the movie and this enhances the quality of both the comedy and the plot.

Things That Were Meh

Now let’s take a look at the parts of “Set It Up” that are what holds it back from being a truly great movie rather than just a fun romp.

This movie has heart, however there is not enough of it to make it a romance of the ages, it has comedy but not in the exactly right way to make it coral and unforgettable. While this movie has all the elements that make a great film, it just doesn’t leave you gasping for breath and in love with the characters. At most I thigh aww, when the main romamance pairing came together, it didn’t make my heart clench, nor tears come to my eyes, nor did instant up and whoop in joy, unlike the best of rom-coms. (I cried like a leaking tap during Ten Things I Hate About You.)

In my opinion, to be a great Rom-Com you must have either brilliant humour, (She’s The Man) or electrifying chemistry (Pretty Woman). This film sadly has neither, and so it is good but not great. The chemistry between the leads is just not enough, and neither is the dialogue brilliant witty (unlike Mean Girls).

My Final Thoughts

“Set it Up” is a fun movie, easy to watch and easy to enjoy. However it is not a movie that you will remember or love fiercely. It does have rewatch value despite that and overall is a fun movie to watch. I would watch it as a feel good rom-com and if you have no other expectations from it you will enjoy it immensely. If you are a fan of rom-coms I say this is a good one to pad the time and leave feeling good.
