Potatoes are a favourite food for many children and elders all over the world; personally sour potatoes are one of my son’s favourites. This is an easy, uncomplicated and mouthwatering recipe that comes straight from the kitchens of my mom and generations of expert Pakistani housewives!  My kids love it and my son even learned to cook it and every time I am not at home he cooks sour potatoes. Try the recipe and let me know how you liked it; I find it Simple and Scrumptious!

Ingredients

SERVES 6

  • ½ Kg potatoes
  • ¼ Kg tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp. ginger paste
  • 1 tbsp. garlic paste
  • 1 tsp. dry coriander (ground)
  • ½ tsp. Red chilli Powder
  • ½ tsp. Salt
  • ¼ tsp. Turmeric
  • 1 tbsp. cumin
  • 4 tbsp. ghee or cooking oil

Instructions

  1. Peel the potatoes and rinse thoroughly.
  2. Cut the potatoes into thin round slices about ⅙ of an inch thick.
  3. Dice the tomatoes.
  4. Put oil in a cooking pot to heat.
  5. When oil is hot put cumin seeds and fry until light brown ( it takes 15 seconds only).
  6. Add garlic and ginger and fry for about 15 seconds.
  7. Put the potatoes in the pot and stir for 30 seconds. Then add tomatoes, salt , chillies , turmeric and coriander powder.
  8. Stir for 30 seconds and lower the heat to minimum level.
  9. Keep checking the progress of the dish every five to ten minutes and cook until the potatoes are soft.
  10. If there is any water left in the pot with the potatoes; turn the heat on high and cook until it evaporates stirring the pot every ten seconds in the meantime to prevent burning.
  11. The sour potatoes are ready; serve with fresh roti or naan.
