Pudna and Pudni: A Fairytale

Once upon a time, in a distant forest there lived a Pudna and a Pudni. They loved each other very dearly and together they explored every inch of their forest and had many adventures and fun times. Every day, Pudna would venture out of their small hut and forage far and wide to bring back exotic and delicious foods which they both enjoyed together

It so happened that one day when Pudna was out foraging and Pudni was home alone, the neighbouring King was travelling through the forest. The king stumbled upon the hut and seeing Pudni, was instantly smitten. He said to Pudni “Come with me and stay in my palace! I will shower you with riches, marvellous clothes, superb food and anything that your heart desires. I will keep you in a cage made of the finest pure gold and you will sleep on silk and bathe in rose water.”

Pudni however refused him, saying, “I have no need of your riches, I want only to live here with my Pudna for the rest of my life.” The king was furious at this rejection and he ordered his soldiers to tie up Pudni and drag her forcibly with him to his palace.

Upon returning home, Pudna discovered that Pudni was missing. Pudna looked for her everywhere in the house and around their home but could not find her. Worried, he set out into the forest to search for her. Soon, he came upon a mouse, the mouse was very anxious and reported that, “Pudna, Pudna, it was horrible, I saw it! Pudni did not want to go but the neighboring King kidnapped her; his soldiers tied her up and carried her away to his palace.”

Pudna was frantic, he immediately ran back home and formed a plan to rescue his Pudni. He worked fast and weaved a car out of reeds, attaching two frogs to the front of the car to pull it. He set out at once towards the Kings palace. Travelling through the forest he soon came upon a Lion, the Lion asked him “Mr. Pudna, Mr. Pudna, where are you going?” Pudna replied, “I wove a car of reeds and attached two frogs to the front, the neighboring king kidnapped my Pudni, I am going to rescue her.” The Lion said, “Mr. Pudna, Mr Pudna, may I come with you?” Pudna replied, “Hop-hop into my ear!”, thus the Lion hopped into Pudna’s ear and Pudna journeyed onwards.

Soon during their travels they came upon a Calico Cat, the Cat asked Pudna,“Mr. Pudna, Mr. Pudna, where are you going?” Pudna replied, “I wove a car of reeds and attached two frogs to the front, the neighboring king kidnapped my Pudni, I am going to rescue her.” The Cat then said, “Mr. Pudna, Mr Pudna, may I come with you?” Pudna replied, “Hop-hop into my ear!”, and so the Cat joined the Lion in Pudna’s ear and they carried on.

Next, they came upon an Ant, the Ant asked Pudna, him “Mr. Pudna, Mr. Pudna, where are you going?” Pudna answered, “I wove a car of reeds and attached two frogs to the front, the neighboring king kidnapped my Pudni, I am going to rescue her.” The Ant enquired, “Mr. Pudna, Mr Pudna, may I come with you?” Pudna responded, “Hop-hop into my ear!”, and so the Ant joined the Cat and Lion in Pudna’s ear and they trekked on.

As they travelled, they soon came upon a River, the River inquired from Pudna, “Mr. Pudna, Mr. Pudna, where are you going?” Pudna responded, “I wove a car of reeds and attached two frogs to the front, the neighboring king kidnapped my Pudni, I am going to rescue her.” The River requested, “Mr. Pudna, Mr Pudna, may I come with you?” Pudna responded, “Hop-hop into my ear!”, and so the River joined the Ant, Cat and Lion in Pudna’s ear and they trudged on.

As they travelled the met all manner of creatures and as they all respected Pudna very much they joined him on his quest. They met a Falcon, a Deer, a Giant Tree, a Wolf, a Fox, a Hill and many other beings who proceeded to join them by hopping into Pudna’s ear.

Finally they arrived at the King’s Palace gates, the gate guards stopped Pudna’s car and asked him, “Who are you and what business do you have with the King?” Pudna responded, “I am Pudan and I have come to rescue my Pudni from the King”. The soldiers seized him and dragged him to the throne room in front of the King. The king upon seeing Pudna, sneered and said, “You dare to defy me?” To the soldiers he ordered, “Throw him in the chicken coop, by morning the hens will have pecked him to death!”

The soldiers left him locked up in the chicken coop surrounded by unkind chicken who were advancing toward him menacingly. He started being pecked so Pudna ran and hid behind a hay bale, soon he had an idea. He whispered, “Miss Cat, Oh Miss Cat, hop-hop out of my ear!” At seeing the threat the cat swiftly killed the chicken, eating a few as she went. She then hopped back into Pudna’s ear and curled up to sleep.

In the morning, when the soldiers arrived, they saw that all the chickens are dead and Pudna is sleeping peacefully. They were very shocked and dragged Pudna in front of the king once more.  The king too was shocked to find Pudna whole and unharmed and he ordered his soldiers to lock him up in the goat’s pen so he would be kicked and trampled to death. When the soldiers left after locking him up, Pudna was encircled and the goats started kicking him. He immediately shouted, “Mr. Lion, Mr. Lion, hop-hop out of my ear!” the Lion complied and upon seeing the threat of the goat surrounding Pudna, he got rid of them, eating a few a he went. He then hopped back into Pudna’s ear and went to sleep.

In the morning when the soldiers discovered Pudna unharmed they were very astonished and immediately grabbed him and presented him to the King again. The King was very angry and he ordered that Pudna be locked up with the elephants. “Let us see if he can survive this!” the King said.

The soldiers locked Pudna up once more and the elephants were about to trample him when Pudna thought to call upon the Ant. “Mr. Ant, Mr. Ant, Hop-hop out of my ear!” The Ant hoped out and upon seeing the elephants he climbed into the nearest ones trunk and bit him from the inside. He did that to all the elephants and they all were soon dead. The Ant then hoped back into Pudna’s ear. In the morning the soldiers found all the elephants dead and Pudna sleeping peacefully.

The soldiers dragged Pudna to the king once more, and now the King was apoplectic with anger. His face was red and purple with rage. He ordered his soldiers, “Drag out this Pudna and his Pudni and execute them both at once!”

“Never!” cried Pudna. “Miss River, Miss River, hop-hop out of my ear!” he shouted. Immediately the river hopped out and flooded the Kings palace with water, carrying away all his soldiers and his throne. Pudna also said, “Mr. Falcon Mr. Falcon, hop-hop out of my ear.” The Faclcon carried Pudna on his back and they found and lifted Pudni’s cage from the water. The King was desperate and cried out, “Oh Mr. Pudna please call back your water and save my palace. I will give you anything you want.” Pudna responded and said, “ I don’t want anything from you, I just want you to free my Pudni and let us live in peace.”

The king agreed and the Pudna asked the river to come back. The river hopped back into Pudna’s ear and the king unlocked Pudni’s cage. Pudna and Pudni embraced each other with joy and got into Pudna’s car and travelled back. They dropped off all their new friends on the way back and thanked them all for helping Pudna free Pudni. Soon they were arrived back home to their small hut and their routine life.

They lived happily ever after. The End.
